Lecture 1: Introduction

Our class began with an introduction to the module and what to expect from this semester. Mr. Charles showed us several works and projects of our seniors to give an idea of what kind of assignments we are getting. Then, he proceeds to explain the most two important things in making a game; "Ludology" and "Narratology".

Exercises

Week 1 | 30.08.2019

The class begins with a discussion session regarding the two board games that Mr. Charles brought to the class. They were Monopoly and Risk. He then informed us about the breakdown of the games, how it's played, the purpose, and the role of the properties (e.g cards/dices) that comes with it.

fig 1.2: Risk Board Game

After that, we were given 10 minutes to come up with a game that could be played by the class within the classroom by modifying the Monopoly game or using its money/dices. Our classmate, Joseph, came up with an idea. The whole goal of the game is to conquer the class's chair. Below are the rules of the game:
  • The game utilizes the Monopoly's money and dice.
  • The class has to be divided into 2 teams and each makes a line.
  • Each player will compete with each other one-by-one in the game of paper, scissors, rock.
  • The winner will then have the opportunity to roll the dice and the number that comes out will be the amount of paper money that could be used by the team to tag the chairs.
  • If all the slots are taken, players have the opportunity to steal the chairs by replacing the tag with theirs'.
  • Within a defined time, whichever team who tagged more chairs wins.

Week 2 | 04.09.2019

Paladins: Champions of the Realm

Game Review

In this week's class, we had the opportunity to hold the class and play digital games at a Cybercafe. We decided to play Paladins in steams with all of our classmates. Paladin is an online Hero shooter video game developed by Hi-Rez Studios. The game requires the players to select a character to play the game or also known as Champions in this game. Each champion falls into one of the following categories: Front Line, Damage, Support, and Flank.

In the span of 3 hours, we played two different game modes, the classic Siege Mode and Deathmatch. Deathmatch requires each team to compete for as many as kill points as possible. The first team to reach 40 kills wins. Whereas the Siege Mode requires the team to face off the opponent's team to secure a Capture Point and then push the Payload to the opponent's base. If the team fails to capture the point, the team has to defend their base and refrain the Payload from reaching the base. Overall, the game mode could be finished in a relatively short amount of time and the players always respawn which allows the players to always join back the game.

The graphic of the game is very detailed and the style of the environment and characters are very "friendly" and have vibrant colors. Rather different from other first-person shooting game I've played before. The sound effect of the game is clear which allows us to differentiate between each weapon.

Overall, the game is highly entertaining and addictive, especially when played with friends. I would love to play again with my fellow friends next time if we have the opportunity.

Week 3 | 14.09.2019

Mobile Legends

Game Review

Gameplay
  • To play the game, players are required to choose a hero. The heroes are divided into several categories: Mage, Support, Tank, Assasin, Marksman.
  • Within the game, players are encouraged to buy items in order to enhance their power/skills.
  • The objective of the game is to destroy the enemy's turrets by pushing to the enemy's base.
  • To refrain players from dying quickly, a punishment of long respawn time is applied.
  • The more kills the player has, the more money it obtains.
  • There are 5 game modes. e.g Classic, Brawl, Rank
  • Diamonds/Golds are a substitute for real money where it can be used to buy heroes, skin, and etc.
  • Skins allow the player's heroes to be stronger.
  • After 15 mins, if the game prolonged, an option to surrender appear. However, to surrender 4 players out of 5 have to agree.
  • Players can equip their own battle spells which consist of Execute, Retribution, Inspire, Sprint., Heal, Aegis, Petrify, Purify, Track, Flicker, Arrival, Vengence.
Graphics
  • As the game is mobile-based, it has an adequate graphic which allows a smooth playing experience.
Sound
  • Each of the characters possesses a distinct sound effect of their own.
  • The "voice announcer" alerts players about the incidents that are occurring in the game as the teams are often time spread across the map.
  • Features such as retreat, attack, gather announcement are also embodied within the game. Allowing easy communication amongst the player.
Controls
  • There are three options for aiming control: Free-aim, Advance Aim, Auto Aim.
  • Mobile control is rather easier than keyboard & mouse control
Engagement
  • The ability to respawn allows the player to get involved in the game again, giving the player another chance.
  • The ranking system motivates players to keep playing well and boost their rank.
  • Daily login rewards motivate the players to access the game daily which may also increase the likeliness of the person playing.
  • When a player completes a task, they are rewarded.
Rating
  • 7.5/10 (Recommended)

UNO Game Cards

Game Review

Gameplay

In UNO, the objective of the game is to finish the cards in hand as fast as possible. Each player will be given 7 cards and the remaining deck will be kept aside as a discard pile.

The first player to play can reveal any card and the card will determine the match criteria for the next player. The other player will have to match either the color, number or symbol of the card that was revealed by the player before him/her. If the players failed to match the card, the players will have to take a card from the discard pile.

What makes the game intense challenging is because players have to call out "Uno" when they play their second-last card as a warning to other players. If the player forgets to do so after laying their second-last cards and is caught by the other players, he/she must draw two cards from the discard pile as a penalty. Else, the player is safe. Moreover, the use of action cards and wild cards as shown in the image below makes the game more engaging to the variable challenges.

Card Design

The design of the card itself is very straightforward with the use of basic color palate (e.g red, blue, yellow, gree, black & white) as well as understandable and universal symbols. All of these made the card's design suitable and friendly for all ages.

Week 4 | 17.09.2019

In this week's class, we got the opportunity to try out Mr.Charles's two board games.

#1 Game

Objectives: The objective of the game is for a team to create as many food supplies and products as possible, surpassing the other 3 teams.

Game Review: The class was split into 4 groups that are made up of 2-3 members each to play the game. Each group is allocated to a certain tribe (e.g Gaia's Children, Inkers, Steel Colony, and Sound Forgers). Darrel and I were in the Gaia's Children Tribe. Each tribe will then have to trade and negotiate with the other tribes to collect resources (e.g steel, water, wood, ink) to create food supplies and products. As resources become more scarce, players can ask opponents to do a dare instead of trading. Overall, the game challenges the players' ability to negotiate, strategize and teamwork.

#2 Game

Objectives: The objective of the game is to conquer as many lands as possible by establishing a design on the land.

Game Review: Each team was given a set of resources (e.g stick, straws, etc) that later will be used to create an object that resembles real-life objects. To conquer a land, the team must first spin the spinner to determine whether they go north, east, south, west. Then, the team will have to design an object from the given resources. The accepted designs are ones that are approved by the majority. The team will also have to draw their logo on the land to indicate their possession. The game continues until players decided to go to war. The war will demand the leftover resources in the replacement of soldiers to attack the opponents. To attack the soldiers, the team will have to do paper, scissors, rock. Moreover, the teams can decide to ally to win the game.

Week 6 | 05.10.2019

Chicken Cha Cha Cha

Objectives: To memorize and move as often as possible to pass other players in order to withdraw them from the game and collect their tails.

Game Review: In this game, for players to move forward they have correctly memorized and flipped the cards in the middle according to the next image in front of their chicken.  If they got it correct they could move forward. Else, they will stay in place. We played this along with the other three people and it was fun and challenging. Especially, when the other player is right behind you. However, the game starts to get boring towards the end as players tend to start to memorize all the cards and will basically chase in each other in a circle. It becomes impossible to win if the other player is on the other side of the circle. We improvised by scrambling the memory cards in the middle to have a fair game but it kind of brake the flow of the game. Nevertheless, we played this several times which says that this game is actually addictive and enjoyable to play with friends and family..

Week 8 | 14.10.2019

The Strategy Game

Objectives: To conquer the space as many as possible by placing our chosen colored piece and blocking other players.

Game Review: The game shares a lot of resemblance to other games such as Blokus that I've played previously in the past. The game can only be played to a maximum number of 4 people. The rules are easy but it really adds to the intricacy of the game. The simple rule is that players can only place their pieces in places that touch the points/edges of the previously placed piece, not the sides. It allows players to asses their logical thinking as well as strategic thinking. The most interesting part of the game is to block other players from spreading further and also taking over the corners as it is a very advantageous place. Overall, the game is fun to play in groups and is suitable across age. I think I would suit best as a family game that could both bond family connections whilst also educate children and asses the parents' brain.

Week 9 | 16.10.2019

Balance Ice Cube

Objectives: To carefully knock down the ice cube without making the penguin fall until the opponent collapses it.

Game Review: When I first played this game, the game reminds me a lot to Jenga as it has almost the same concept just in a different presentation. However, it is unfortunate that only two players can play this game according to the instruction manual. It could have been much more fun if it was bigger and more players could join. Throughout the game, players take turns to spin the spinner to determine which type of block the player must knockdown. If the player knocked on the wrong cube and the penguin falls the player loses. Overall, it was an entertaining game especially with the ice hammer that we have to use to knock down the penguin. I played this several rounds just because it was fun to knock the ice cubes with the hammer but in terms of intensity I feel Jenga is still more superior than this.
